These are the ruins of a mansion built by Sir Thomas Browne in 1449. Alterations were later made in 1705, and in 1799 by Sir John Soane. Historical records indicate that Betchworth Castle dates to at least 1377. This is when Sir John Fitzalan, Marshal of England, was granted licence to crenellate his residence there. It is likely that the fortified house was constructed on the site of an earlier castle. Traces of this may survive beneath these later buildings. Read official list description.
